Our Class One classroom is a play based explorative environment where children can learn through play and investigative activities. There are dedicated literacy and numeracy areas where children can explore learning and make choices about what they are learning. There are also areas set up for expressive arts and art and an area for Investigation and story-telling. All areas of the classroom have appropriate books for children to read stories and carry out any research. Reading is a highly promoted skill and we think it is very important for children to develop a love of reading from an early age. Our reading corner celebrates books we have enjoyed together as a class.
We encourage the children to take ownership of their learning and develop independence in the classroom. Resources are easily accessible to all the children and different levels of challenge and expectation to suit the different year groups. We believe that when children are learning independently, doing activities that interest them, they are more likely to retain their learning. This is complimented by formal teaching and learning in the core and wider curriculum subjects to ensure that all children access and engage in the whole curriculum.
In addition to our indoor learning classroom, we are lucky enough to have a large outdoor environment which promotes learning with a more physical experience. We have a climbing area, big block building, a water investigation station, art and wheeled toys. The school provide waterproof clothing and wellies so that children can access the outdoor learning environment whatever the weather and adults are passionate about children having access to the outdoors.
In Class One, we develop the foundations for forming and maintaining positive friendships with our peers and learn how to be successful pupils in school. Having good friends and learning together is a key part of our early development, and gives us the skills to be successful as we move through school at Runcton Holme.
