This year the schools are part of the Early Adopter of the new Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) curriculum. Following a government re-vamp this new curriculum will be introduced as a statutory curriculum in September 2021. Being an Early Adopter means we get to run this new curriculum a year early, and finding out how the changes improve learning experiences for our youngest children.
We are excited that despite the restrictions due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the school is still maintaining a learning through play approach to the children in Reception Class with great access to indoor and outdoor learning and activities.
Teachers have engaged in some useful training in Phonics and therefore our pupils will benefit from extra phonics teaching and learning which we are expecting to have a big impact on early reading and writing skills. This will enable the children to reach a good level of learning by the end of their reception year and be equipped with the necessary knowledge and understanding to be successful as they move into Key Stage 1 and beyond.
Stronger relationships with parents will be sought and we will work with families to help support learning at home. There is also a great deal we can learn from parents and families which helps us to provide a tailored experience for each child.
We are looking forward to seeing the new curriculum take shape in our schools and watch the on-going successes of the children coming to learn with us at The Holy Cross Federation.
