Reading Rationale
From the beginning of the Sounds-Write journey, children in EYFS will be able to access a wide range of reading books from the official Sounds-Write programme. These books will enable children to practice the literacy skills they are learning and thereby gain fluency in reading, all while they enjoy the colourfully-illustrated stories.

As our young readers move on to the Extended Code, we continue to closely match their phonetic knowledge with books that match the sounds taught in their Phonics lessons. Again, these books are official Sounds-Write books which ensures we maintain fidelity to the programme. 

We are very fortunate here at Holy Cross CofE Primary School as we have a fantastic range of texts ready and waiting for our now confident readers to begin to access. Some of these are short chapter books which allow the children to begin to develop their reading stamina and experiences as they begin to select their own choices of book. 

We are also very excited about reading following the launch of Whole Class Reading. Whole-class reading sessions mean that children of all attainment levels are immersed in the same high-quality literature and the discussions that these texts promote. It is essential that less confident readers are exposed to the high-quality reasoning of more confident readers and become part of these discussions, mixed-attainment pairs allow for frequent paired discussion.

These lessons:
Are built around the teacher reading high-quality and challenging texts, which are dissected by the class through high-level questioning and discussion.

Include a range of activities – not all of which have to have a written outcome – that enable pupils to develop their vocabulary and comprehension skills.

Through our well-resourced library and individual class reading corners in some classrooms, children will be immersed in a wide range of genres and will use a variety of reading skills to enable them to access all other areas of learning. Reading should be a valuable and rewarding aspect to children's learning and consequently should open the door to a world of knowledge.
